Tips for Curling Your Hair

There are many ways to achieve that perfect curl. Curls can add a new style to your look, adding definition and volume to your hair giving a beautiful dimensional look. Curly hair is a great hairstyle for a casual lunch date, a night out, or even a formal runway look. Curling hair involves a step by step process with tips that are essential to get the best results.

Before you start putting heat on your hair you want to prep the hair just as you would with makeup. Prepping the hair is just as important as the actual curling itself in order to accomplish the perfect, silky desired curl.

Step 1) Make sure your hair is dry.

Do not apply heat to wet or damp hair, it can cause unnecessary heat damage and burn the hair. If the hair is damp and you are in a rush, go over with a blow dryer. Better safe than sorry.

Step 2) Apply heat protectant before curling the hair.

Protecting the hair from heat as much as possible is very important in keeping the hair looking healthy and shiny. Heat can dry out the hair and derive the hair of the rich color achieved in the salon. Heat protectant is vital in maintaining healthy, gorgeous looking hair.
Some recommended heat protectants include

  • TIGI S-Factor Flat Iron Spray
  • TIGI Catwalk Haute Iron Spray
  • TIGI Catwalk Blowout Balm

When curling the hair there some key tips to keep in mind during and after the process to achieve best results.

Tip 1) Never go beyond 400 degrees when setting the temperature of the hair iron.

For normal hair, the temperature should be set at 300-380 and for thicker hair at 350-400. If your hair is treated with color chemicals, 390 degrees Fahrenheit is the maximum temperature safe for maintaining colored hair from fading.

Tip 2) Give yourself enough time to curl your hair.

Speed curling will not give you the same results as taking your time curling. When running the curling iron use slow, smooth motions. If it is not necessary, do not go over the same piece more than once to prevent over heat damage.

Tip 3) Section the hair.

When curling the hair it makes it much easier and manageable when you section the hair. You may section the hair in four parts.

  • Right front top
  •  Right bottom
  •  Left front top
  •  Left bottom

When sectioning, place hair evenly to both sides then separate top section from bottom section on each side and use clips to hold. Sectioning the hair makes the curling process much more faster and the results much more precise.

Tip 4) When finished, run shine gloss/oil through the hair to add a luminous, silky look to the hair.

Some favorites we recommend are

  • TIGI Bedhead Headrush Shine Gloss
  • TIGI Catwalk Blowout Balm
  • TIGI S-Factor True Lasting Colour
  • TIGI Catwalk Camera Ready Shine Spray
